To think … we could be Jittering!

"Starting February 20, Twitter has been shortening tweets that include a URL to as few as 117 characters, due to changes in how Twitter’s t.co link wrapper handles URLs."

8 Twitter Best Practices | Social Media Today

  1. Don’t start a tweet with a hashtag. Let us see your thought, idea, comment, or story first.
  2. Please, please don’t use more than 3 hashtags in a tweet. If you do use three hashtags, do it sparingly. It’s just annoying.
  3. This rule is going to go against what most “tweeps” believe! Don’t strive for followers. Strive for engagement. Ask people questions and engage with them! They’ll like it. In the long run, you’ll get more followers this way.
  4. Some people just don’t follow back. That doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t interact with you! Tweet them a question, idea, or story.
  5. Even though you have a maximum of 140 characters, you don’t have to use all 140 characters. Try using around 120 characters. This will allow other tweeps the ability to retweet you.
  6. Add a profile picture. Enough said. You’d be surprised at how many people don’t add a profile picture.
  7. If you were selling your house, would you make it look nice for an open house or showing? Absolutely! Same applies for you twitter handle. Add a background, make it look nice.
  8. Should you come across a spam account (and you will) please report them. The less spam accounts there are on twitter, the better it will be for all of us.
  9. Add a description. By looking at some of your information, Tweeps who don’t know you will be able to find out what to Tweet with you about?
  10. If you’re struggling on determining how long your tweet should be, what your tweet should contain, hashtags, etc. remember to K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid.)
  11. In the end, just be yourself. Be authentic. Create value and enrich people’s tweets with great content!

10.13.12 - Twitter Ads

If you’re a tweeter, you may have noticed that there are now surreptitious ads showing up on Twitter.  Since it’s a new offering to the public from Twitter, I thought I’d take the time to tell you the high points and merits of the different ad options

Twitter now has two ways to get your content or presence in front of potential customers, promoted accounts and promoted tweets.  I’ve outlined the differences below and given you screen shots to understand how each is displayed.

-        Both features can target by location (country, state, and/or region)

-        Promoted Account – shows your account in the “Who to follow” list on the right side of the Tweets stream

  • You only pay for the followers you gain from the ad
  • You set the price you’ll pay for new followers (between $0.01 and $2.50)
  • You can limit the amount you spend per day

-        Promoted Tweet – shows your tweet in users’ feeds

  • Twitter can choose your most engaging tweet to display, you can write a new tweet, or you can manually select one from your feed
  • You only pay for the click you get from the ad
  • You set the price you’ll pay for each click (between $0.01 and $1.50)
  • You can limit the amount you spend per day

Twitter Is a Necessary Element of any Social Media Strategy

I came across an informative article from eMarketer, which states that Twitter followers are more likely to induce advocacy and make future purchases than those on Facebook.  According to eMarketer’s data, 37% of the respondents interviewed were more likely to purchase from a brand after following them on Twitter as opposed to only 17% of those that “like” a brand on Facebook.

Since Twitter is a platform that attracts an audience that is receptive to marketing messages much more than Facebook, we aren’t surprised by the results above.  A coworker found a great quote about this that goes something like this: “Facebook is for the people you know, while Twitter is for those you want to know.”  Many of those that find value in Twitter see that value in its function as a news platform.  In fact, 44% of adult internet users aged 18-29 and 45% aged 30-49 are getting their news online.
Twitter must be a part of your social media strategy.  Social media is a quality versus quantity play and nowhere is it more apparent for brands than on Twitter.  That said, we’ll keep tweeting and capturing your audience’s attention on your behalf; may the tweets be with you!
